The Cormorant – phalacrocorax carbo

Adult size (approx.): 45cm
Habitat
A large black bird with a distinctive hooked beak. Commonly found in the United Kingdom, particularly at the coast. They can also be found around lakes, reservoirs and rivers. They reach their highest numbers in the winter period. The Cormorant breeds in nesting in colonies near water.
Importance
They can be a nuisance around fisheries and ponds where they poach fish. The Cormorant have been implicated in the loss and damage of large numbers of fish in commercial fisheries.
Control
Again the use of netting is widely used due to scaring devices hardly working and shooting can be time consuming and the relevant licenses applied for through the Agricultural Department.
