The Grey Heron – ardea cinera

Adult size (approx.): 90cm
Habitat
A large wading bird with a long neck, legs and bill. Mainly grey in colour with a white head and neck with a black crest. The Grey Heron nest in trees and tend to feed in shallow fresh or coastal water and in marshes feeding on mainly fish.
Importance
Feeding on trout farms or fisheries can cause problems leading to damage to stock as they can physically remove fish from the water and reduce their value. They may also spread disease from fish farm to fish farm.
Control
Proofing with the use of netting is best in this case as shooting is prohibited.
